When Buyers Need a Bowden Cable

Inner cable and outer casing
A Bowden-style cable usually has an inner wire and an outer casing. The inner wire moves, while the casing supports the route and reaction force. Buyers should provide the inner cable diameter, outer casing diameter, casing type if known, and whether the casing ends use special ferrules or adjusters.

Overall length and stroke

End fittings and connection interfaces

When requesting a quote, show end A and end B with close-up photos. Include thread size, ball diameter, stop sleeve dimensions, adjuster length or any mating bracket information if applicable. If the buyer only writes “brake cable” or “control cable” without fitting information, the supplier cannot reliably review the requirement.
Routing and application environment
Routing matters because control cables often bend through equipment. A cable used in mechanical equipment, vehicle control, gym equipment or industrial machinery may have different routing constraints. Buyers should explain the route, bend areas, installation direction and whether the cable is exposed to moisture, abrasion or other environmental conditions.
The application also affects packaging and replacement planning. A maintenance buyer may need cables packed by machine model. An OEM buyer may need a drawing revision and batch quantity. A repair buyer may need sample-based matching from a worn cable.

Buyers should also avoid mixing terms without explanation. A purchasing request that says “Bowden cable, brake cable, throttle cable” may describe the same cable family, but it may also create confusion if the function is not stated. Instead, describe the movement: pull-only, push-pull, brake release, throttle control, latch release or routed mechanical operation. Then attach the dimensions and fitting details.
