A useful review starts with the movement direction, installed path, support points and equipment interfaces, then identifies the housing construction, liner, outside cover and end supports that the project actually requires. Supplier terminology can differ, so a sample or controlled drawing is more reliable than assuming two catalog names mean the same thing.

Separate construction from dimensions

Housing construction describes how the outer conduit is built and supported. Housing length, inside clearance, outside diameter and end-to-end references are dimensional fields. A liner or protective cover is another detail. These items interact, but they should not be merged into a single “Bowden size” note.

When reviewing a known assembly, use the drawing or supplier record to identify the housing. When the type is unknown, provide close-up photos of both housing ends and a full cable view. Do not identify material, liner composition or reinforcement from color or appearance alone.

Common construction families are not interchangeable labels

Suppliers may describe conduit using terms for spiral-wound, flat-wire, reinforced, lined or other housing families. Some describe the support arrangement; others identify a liner, protective cover or product series. The details and available variants depend on the manufacturer and the intended application.

The construction may affect how the assembly bends, supports an inner member or fits at a bracket, but the effect must be confirmed for the actual product. Do not assume that one construction is suitable for pushing, repeated movement, a tight route or a particular load just because its name sounds similar to another supplier’s catalog term.

Choose around the mechanism and route

Begin with the job the cable performs. Is movement pull-only, or must the assembly transfer motion in both directions? Does a return spring or linkage provide the reverse movement? Where are the housing ends supported, and which sections move relative to the equipment?

Next, record the path through the machine. Mark bends, guides, clamps, bulkhead or panel supports, moving parts and clearance restrictions. Add the neutral and working positions where the cable moves. If the assembly passes through an area exposed to heat, moisture, dirt, abrasion or cleaning, state the known exposure instead of selecting an unconfirmed jacket material.

Review the inner member, liner and end supports together

A housing does not work in isolation from the inner cable. The interface between the inner member, any liner and the selected route should be confirmed from the project requirement or supplier review. If the buyer specifies a liner, record the requested construction and the reason it matters, such as a design requirement already defined by the equipment owner. Do not assume a generic liner offers a specific friction, temperature or service-life result.

The housing ends also need to fit the brackets, adjusters, ferrules, stops or other mounting parts. Photograph each casing end separately from the inner cable terminal, because the two ends may connect to different parts of the equipment. Identify any end cap, support sleeve, lock feature or adjustable mounting point that is part of the sample or drawing.

A practical housing selection record

Prepare the following information before quotation:

  • Cable function and required movement direction.
  • Inner cable or core information when known.
  • Existing housing type or sample reference, if identified.
  • Housing length and outside dimension with measurement surfaces stated.
  • Liner, cover or environmental requirement only when defined.
  • Route, support points, constrained bends and installation clearance.
  • End A and End B housing supports and inner cable fittings.
  • Drawing revision, sample condition, equipment context and quantity.
