Overview
Sample-based cable assembly matching is useful when the buyer has an existing cable but no complete drawing. The sample might come from industrial equipment, a control mechanism, a gym machine, a suspension kit or a custom hardware project. The sample provides important clues, but it must be documented carefully before a quotation discussion can be useful.
The goal is not to guess the product name. The goal is to describe the sample in a way that shows cable type, length, end fittings, movement, route and application. A supplier can then review whether additional dimensions, photos or drawings are needed.
Prepare the sample
Lay the cable on a flat surface if possible. Do not stretch it aggressively. If the cable is bent from use, photograph it both in its natural shape and as straight as practical. If the sample is broken, keep all pieces and photograph the break area. If one end is missing, say that clearly.
Use a measuring tape in the photo when possible. A photo with scale is more useful than a close-up with no reference. For small fittings, add a ruler next to the part. If the fitting has a thread or slot, show it from more than one angle.
Photograph the complete assembly
Take one full-length photo showing the entire cable. Then take separate close-ups of end A, end B, any casing ends, sleeve positions, coating transitions, stop sleeves, ball ends, hooks, threaded terminals or special features. If the cable was removed from equipment, photograph the installation route before removal if possible.
Labeling photos can help. Even simple names such as “machine side,” “handle side,” “weight stack end” or “ceiling end” can make the review clearer. If several similar cables are being quoted, separate the photos by cable model or sample number.
Measure key dimensions
Measure total length from defined reference points. For looped assemblies, explain whether the measurement includes the loop. For control cables, measure total length, casing length and stroke. For gym cables, measure total length and terminal dimensions. For suspension kits, measure cable length and identify the top and bottom fittings.
Measure cable diameter and finished coated diameter if relevant. For fittings, measure the main dimensions that affect installation, such as thread size, ball diameter, sleeve length, loop size or gripper body dimensions. If a dimension cannot be measured accurately, state that it is approximate.
Explain the application
The same sample shape may serve different applications. Tell the supplier what the cable does. Does it suspend a light, route through a pulley, pull a lever, retain a tool, connect hardware or replace a machine part? Application notes help identify which dimensions are critical.
If the sample is from a replacement project, state whether the original cable worked correctly before it failed. If the cable was modified or repaired, mention that too. A repaired sample may not represent the original design.

Procurement notes for reducing matching risk
Sample matching always carries some risk because the sample may not show the original design perfectly. A used cable can stretch, bend, lose coating, deform at the terminal or be repaired with a non-original part. Buyers can reduce this risk by explaining the sample condition. Write whether the sample is original, used, damaged, modified or incomplete. If the buyer is not sure, say that directly.
When the cable came from equipment, application photos are valuable. A removed cable tells part of the story, but the route and mating parts explain why the cable has that shape. Photograph brackets, pulleys, levers, ceiling connections or machine ends before the cable is removed if possible. These photos help identify which dimensions are installation-critical.
For purchasing teams, it is useful to create a simple sample table. Include sample number, product or machine reference, total length, cable diameter, end A description, end B description, quantity and notes. This table does not need to replace photos. It simply keeps multiple samples from being mixed together during RFQ communication.
If the sample is too worn for reliable measurement, ask whether a drawing, sketch or new sample can be prepared. A rough sketch with measurement points may still improve the quotation discussion. The goal is to move from visual guessing to confirmed dimensions wherever possible.
Buyers should keep a copy of the final confirmed dimensions after the first matching discussion. Replacement cable projects often repeat months later, and relying on a new photo each time can create inconsistency. A small buyer-side record with sample photos, measurements, application notes and the final quotation reference can help future purchasing teams prepare cleaner RFQs.
It is also helpful to separate “must match” details from preferences. End fitting dimensions and overall length may be critical. Packaging, color or label text may be preferences unless the buyer states otherwise. Marking priorities helps the supplier understand which questions must be resolved before quotation and which can be discussed as options.

Can a damaged sample still be useful?
Yes. It can start the review, but the buyer should explain which parts are damaged or missing.
Do I need a drawing if I have a sample?
Not always. Photos and measurements may be enough to begin, but a drawing or sketch may be requested for unclear dimensions.
How many photos should I send?
Send one full cable photo plus close-ups of both ends and any special fittings, casing or coating transitions.
What if two cables look almost the same?
Separate them by sample number and measure each one. Similar-looking cables may have different lengths or fittings.
