For a commercial gym cable RFQ, measure the cable in the machine context and identify both end fittings before choosing a replacement path. Replacement, prototype and production are different requests

Start by identifying the purchasing context:

1. Photograph the installed route first

Before removing a worn cable, photograph it in place if the equipment can be made safe for inspection. A loose cable does not show the path around pulleys, anchor points, selectors, guides or adjustment hardware.

Capture:

  • The full cable route from one connection to the other.
  • Pulley direction and any anchor or selector connection.
  • Housing, sleeve, guide or stop locations.
  • The tightest bend and nearby clearance.
  • The machine-side connection at each end.

Add a simple orientation note such as “operator side,” “weight-stack side” or another equipment reference. Use the same orientation in every later photo.

2. Measure using reference points

Overall length is useful only when the reference points are clear. Mark the point where the cable or fitting connects at each end and measure between those points. If the assembly includes a ball, eye, loop, stop or threaded terminal, state whether the measurement ends at the fitting centerline, shoulder, face or another defined point.

Separate these fields:

  • Overall assembly length.
  • Effective cable length between the working end references.
  • Housing or casing length, if present.
  • Exposed inner cable length.
  • Terminal or fitting length outside the cable body.
  • Adjustment or threaded section length.

Do not combine a machine measurement and a loose-cable measurement without explaining how the two were taken. If a cable is stretched, bent or broken, note the condition and identify which measurement is approximate.

3. Record cable body and coating

The cable body should be described with the evidence available, not with an assumed catalog value. Record wire rope diameter when measured, and state whether the cable is bare, coated or covered by another housing. If coating changes the finished outside diameter or pulley clearance, measure or photograph that condition.

Useful RFQ notes include:

  • Wire rope diameter or the measurement method used.
  • Coating type or color when known.
  • Finished outside diameter when it controls a guide or pulley.
  • Any wear, flattening, broken wires or coating damage visible on the sample.
  • Whether the replacement should follow the existing finish or a revised requirement.

4. Identify both end fittings

Terminal geometry often controls fit more than the cable body. Photograph each end separately and label it consistently. Show the mating machine hardware whenever possible.

Ball and stop details

For a ball or stop, show the seating pocket, neck or shoulder and the direction in which the cable enters the machine. Measure the reference point used for length. A ball-shaped end without the machine-side pocket does not fully define the interface.

Eye and loop details

For an eye or loop, show the pin, bolt, hook or anchor hardware. Record the opening, orientation and any sleeve or ferrule visible at the loop. State whether the eye pivots or remains fixed.

Threaded terminals

For threaded ends, show the mating thread, reference face, exposed length, locknut or adjuster and the bracket position. If thread information is unknown, mark it for confirmation rather than estimating it from a photograph.

5. Use sample-based matching carefully

A removed cable can be a valuable reference when it is photographed and measured before shipment. Include:

  1. Full front and back views of the sample.
  2. End A and End B close-ups.
  3. A ruler or measured sketch beside the cable.
  4. Route and machine photos from before removal.
  5. Notes about wear, stretching, breakage or modifications.
  6. Quantity and whether one sample represents the full production requirement.

6. Replacement and production handoff

A one-off replacement may focus on restoring a machine to service. A production order may also need a controlled reference, packaging, labeling, revision and quantity plan. Keep those paths separate in the request so a maintenance measurement is not mistaken for an approved production drawing.

For repeat production, add:

  • The reference drawing or sample revision.
  • Required quantity and expected order grouping.
  • Packaging or labeling notes.
  • Any inspection or documentation request supported by the project.
  • The machine or cable family the reference belongs to.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is sending a product name and a loose-cable length without the machine route. Another is taking only one terminal photo, even when the two ends look similar. A third is mixing a worn sample’s measured condition with the intended production specification. Keep the original evidence, the desired replacement requirement and the open questions in separate notes.

Should I measure the cable before removing it?

If it is safe and practical, photograph the installed route and mark the equipment reference points before removal. Then measure the loose cable using the same references and note any wear or deformation.

What if the end fitting name is unknown?

Use clear close-ups with the machine-side bracket or pin visible, add a measured sketch and describe what the fitting connects to. A name is helpful but not required to start the review.

Can a machine model replace cable measurements?

Machine information helps identify context, but it does not replace the actual route, length and terminal evidence. Different revisions or installed configurations can require different cable assemblies.
